No Woman No Cry
Im teaching my Year 9’s how to play “No Woman No Cry” by the late, great Bob Marley. When I introduce the song we talk about what the title actually means. There is alot of debate about its exact meaning but yesterday a student said that his dad had told him it was about when the queen of englands rule of jamaica came to an end. I looked it up and found a single quote on a blog page soewhere….
“‘No Woman,No Cry’ is a reference to Englands prior control of Jamaica. “Woman” is a reference to the Queen of England. They used to protest in Trench Town all night long against England. A purely political song.”
Mmmmm….any other ideas?
I think the song is Bob saying to his wife “I may commit marital rape against you and have innumerable extra-marital affairs, but you shouldn’t cry about it. OK?”
